Have A Question?
1. Do I need an architect?
It depends on the project and what you want to achieve. Not every project needs an architect, and for some straightforward work you may be able to manage the process yourself.
An architect can be useful when you want help understanding what is possible, exploring different options or making sure the decisions you make are right for your home, your budget and the way you want to live.
Think of an architect as a consultant as much as a designer. We can help you navigate planning and regulations, develop ideas and make informed decisions throughout the project.
If you're not sure whether you need an architect, an initial conversation can be a useful place to start. We can talk through what you're hoping to do and whether architectural support would be helpful.
2. Can you help if I don't know what I want yet?
Yes. You don't need to have a fully formed idea before getting in touch. Sometimes you simply know that something isn't working in your home, or that you need more space, but you're not sure what the answer is.
We can talk through what isn't working, what you'd like to change and what you're hoping to achieve, then look at different options together to see what could work.
3. How much does an architect cost?
There isn't a fixed cost, as it depends on the size and complexity of your project and how much support you need.
I can provide support for individual stages, such as feasibility or planning, or stay involved through the design and construction of your project. Once I understand what you're hoping to do and the level of support you're looking for, I can put together a fee proposal tailored to your project.
4. Can you tell me how much my project will cost?
I can't tell you exactly how much your project will cost from the start, but I can give you a realistic estimate based on what you want to achieve. This can be based on the size of the project and typical construction rates for the type of work involved. But the final construction cost can only be established once the design is complete and a builder has priced the finished project.
As the design develops, I can help guide the design to stay in line with your budget and highlight other costs you may need to allow for, such as planning and building control fees or additional consultants.
The estimate becomes more accurate as the design develops. I recommend getting an early indication of construction costs from a builder before the design is fully finished, so we can sense-check the proposals and make changes if needed.
5. Do I need planning permission?
It depends on what you want to do. Some projects need a planning application, while others may be possible under your permitted development rights.
I can help you understand which route may apply to your project and what permissions or approvals you'll need before you start.
6. How long does an extension take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the project, and how much of the process you need support with.
For a typical extension, I would allow around 5-6 months for the design process.
Once the design is complete, construction will typically take a further 6–9 months, depending on the final design and the builder you appoint.
Every project is different, and I can give you a more accurate idea once I understand what you're hoping to do.
7. Do you do all stages of my project?
Yes. I can support you from the beginning of the project until the end of construction on site.
You don't have to use me for every stage, though. If you only need help with part of the process, I can tailor my involvement to what you need — whether that's exploring what's possible, developing the design, getting planning permission or preparing the technical drawings for your builder.
The level of support is discussed with you at the beginning, so you know what I'm involved in and what to expect at each stage
8. Can you help me find a builder?
Yes. I can help you find a builder who is right for your project.
I also like to involve builders early, before the design is complete. Their practical experience can be really useful while the design is developing and identify potential issues before the design is finalised.
Choosing the right builder is an important part of the process. They may be working in your home for several months, so having someone you feel comfortable with and can trust is just as important as finding someone who can build the project well.
